UK homeowners get some respite as inflation falls by more than anticipated to a 15-month low

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:55:36 GMT

LONDON (AP) — Inflation in the U.K. has fallen by more than anticipated to a 15-month low, official figures showed Wednesday, a development that may ease the pressure on the Bank of England to raise interest rates sharply over the coming months to the potential relief of struggling households. The Office for National Statistics said that inflation, as measured by the consumer prices index, fell to 7.9% in the year to June from 8.7% the previous month. Most economists had expected a more modest decline to 8.2%.The statistics agency said the falling of fuel prices was the biggest driver behind the drop, while food price inflation also pared back, though remained historically high. Despite the decline, inflation is still running far higher than the Bank of England’s target rate of 2%. As a result, the central bank is expected to raise its main interest rate further at its upcoming meeting in early August. However, analysts said the bigger-than-expected fall may mean it only raises...

Nigeria’s focus will turn from finances to football for its Women’s World Cup opener against Canada

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — All the focus on Randy Waldrum’s criticism of the Nigerian soccer federation and the rebuke he received in return will count for very little Friday when the Super Falcons open their Women’s World Cup campaign against Canada.“I think the players have appreciated the fact that I will step up for them and speak out on their behalf,” Waldrum said of his comments about the federation’s financial support for his team. “As a coach, I need to be a voice for the girls and fight for the things that they deserve to be getting.”Ever since the Super Falcons touched down in Australia this month, though, the mindset of Waldrum and his team has shifted from pay and conditions to the task at hand.“Forget about the distractions, and just focus on the game,” star striker Asisat Oshoala, who plays for Barcelona, said after a training session in Brisbane this week. It’s a sentiment Waldrum, who coaches the University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team, fully supports...

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:55:36 GMT

Summer is a great time for a road trip. But if your ride is an electric vehicle, it will take some careful planning.Whether you’re driving a Tesla Model 3 or a Nissan Leaf, John Vincent, senior automotive correspondent at U.S. News and World Report, said the road trip requires preplanning charging stops.“You don’t want to get yourself stuck and unfortunately, with EVs, there isn’t a gas station right around every corner. There are a lot of tools out there that will map your routes, with charging stations along the way. A few caveats to that, though — you have to look at the weather because if the weather is cold, you’re not going to have the range that you typically get,” Vincent said.EV drivers also must map a route with a second charging station in range of the station where they’re planning to recharge, in case the first charger isn’t working.“If you’re taking a road trip in an EV, you probably have your car pretty well ...
