The chip on T.J. Edwards’ shoulder remains 5 years later — and he’s using it to drive his productive Chicago Bears season

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:50:03 GMT

Nearly five years have passed since that weekend, but Chicago Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards still points to the ongoing drive he feels from it.Edwards has started 60 NFL games. He played for the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl in February. This season with the Bears, he ranks sixth in the NFL with 131 tackles and fourth with 76 solo tackles. But you know what? Going undrafted out of Wisconsin in 2019 still eats at him.“Coming out and going undrafted put a huge chip on my shoulder,” Edwards said. “It was five years ago now, but it still sits with me. Honestly, just never being complacent with where I’m at has allowed me to just have that drive and motivation to keep going. I always want to do more for my teammates. I always want to make more plays. I still don’t think I’m the best player I can be yet.”When Ryan Poles signed Edwards to a three-year, $19.5 million contract in March, the Bears general manager called it an “awesome sto...

Joe Soucheray: A unifying theme? Flag that as wishful thinking

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:50:03 GMT

Nothing says Minnesota like brush strokes of color on a blank canvas, like a sample card at the paint store. A star is helpful. All three finalists in the contest to become the new state flag feature a star, the North Star. The design chosen Friday contains white, green and blue horizontal stripes and a navy blue section that, if prompted, can be believed to resemble a map of Minnesota. The proposed flags are mindful of bobbleheads. Sports teams sometimes give away bobbleheads of players as a promotional attraction. I think the teams order a couple of crates of bobbleheads from some outfit in China and when they unpack the crate, they decide who the bobblehead most looks like. The state’s Emblems Redesign Commission does the same thing, assigning meaning to colors and lines and curls and stars, meanings as obtuse as a Winter Carnival Treasure Hunt clue. The star in the leading flag, for example, is to suggest unity in a diverse land.It does? How?Somebody has to say it. We can’t all be ...

FDA targets Chewy, other pet companies for selling unapproved antibiotics

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:50:03 GMT

(The Hill) — Major animal product retailer Chewy and eight other companies violated federal law by selling unapproved animal antibiotics, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alleged Thursday. The FDA said the retailers sold unapproved medications containing penicillin and amoxicillin, which could lead to the evolution of drug-resistant "superbugs." The products in question were targeted at birds and fish, the FDA wrote in a letter to the companies.Drug-resistant superbugs could then pose a risk to human health, argued Tracey Forfa, the FDA veterinary medicine director. Southern California repo man killed on the job, suspect at large "Inappropriate use of medically important antimicrobials contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance, which affects both human and animal health," Forfa said in a statement Thursday.Medications containing the antibiotics are only available via prescription. Impacted products include Aqua-Mox, Aqua-Zithro, Doxycycline and Fishbiotic.Nin...

Muralists add creative touch to San Jose’s Christmas in the Park

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:50:03 GMT

I strolled through Christmas in the Park during the past week to check out four new additions to downtown San Jose’s cherished holiday display. The recent arrivals aren’t animatronic elves or a grove of decorated trees but four colorful murals that explore different perspectives of the holiday.Francisco Ramirez’s “The Joy of Christmas” captures that gleeful moment of receiving a gift (and his son was the model for the artwork); Alyssarhaye Graciano, a fiber artist born and raised in San Jose, worked with her dad on an elegant mural, “Magandang Gabi Mga Bituin” (Goodnight Stars), that she says helped her connect with the Filipino side of her cultural heritage; Alyssa Wigant, who is well known for typography-based artwork, also leaned into her culture with “Maligayang Pasko,” which translates to “Merry Christmas” in Tagalog; and John Barrick, also born and raised in San Jose, set his sights on nostalgia, with a postcard-style...

Will a year of industrial accidents change the landscape of East Bay’s ‘refinery row’?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:50:03 GMT

On Friday morning, Contra Costa County Public Health warned residents about a new flaring incident at the Martinez Refinery. The agency said that unidentified chemical odors in the air could be related to the event and that “eye, skin, nose or throat irritation may be possible for some people in the affected area.”The public health advisory in Martinez came exactly one week after the air surrounding the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond took on the distinct smell of burning tires. Over a hundred local residents, disturbed by the noxious odor, reported it to the local air quality agency. Both incidents, although by no means the most dramatic, were more mishaps in a long year of refinery accidents and violations in the East Bay industrial cluster that forms a sort of refinery row.Refineries have long been part of the Bay Area’s economic and energy ecosystem. Many of them have existed for over a hundred years and still serve as a significant tax base for cities and a source o...

San Jose, Union City tech workers accused of stealing devices and secrets, making smoking-gun mistakes

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:50:03 GMT

A San Jose technology worker and his long-time colleague from Union City are accused in a new lawsuit of stealing electronic devices and trade secrets from their then-employer and posting evidence of the theft online that contained traceable digital fingerprints. Before quitting computer-circuit giant Microchip Technology and joining a Bay Area company, Cang Nguyen of San Jose and Jerry Chang of Union City “surreptitiously stole” electronic devices and proprietary information from the Arizona-based Microchip, the lawsuit alleged.“Nguyen and Chang did so to break into an established industry — bypassing extensive development work — and steal sales from Microchip,” claimed the lawsuit in San Jose U.S. District Court against the two men and a new company called GTMi that Chang started in 2018.Microchip is seeking a court order forcing GTMi to return allegedly stolen devices and confidential information, and barring GTMi and the two men from any use of Microchip d...

Primera semana de Javier Milei como presidente de Argentina, a toda velocidad

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:50:03 GMT
